"The new ultrasound facilities of the Clinic have incorporated two high-end equipment, so that we now have the latest generation devices".
DR. MARIANA ELORZ CARLÓN SPECIALIST. RADIOLOGY SERVICE
Thyroid ultrasound is a procedure that allows us to obtain images of many of the structures in our body through ultra-frequency waves.
Ultrasound uses ultrasound, not X-rays. Multiple studies have shown that these ultrasounds are harmless and can be used with total safety, as in the case of a pregnant woman where X-rays or CT would not be appropriate.
Once the nodule in the thyroid has been detected, the diagnosis is made by means of an ultrasound with cytological study by fine needle aspiration, which is very sensitive for the diagnosis of the malignancy of the thyroid nodule.
The material extracted in this puncture is sent to the Pathological Anatomy Service where it is analyzed immediately. Thus, in less than 4 hours from their arrival at the Clinica, we can inform the patient of the result of the study and know if the nodule they present is benign or not.
The team of specialists in the Thyroid Pathology Area will indicate the most appropriate treatment for the patient in his or her specific case, and in less than 24 hours the treatment can be carried out.
When is thyroid ultrasound indicated?
The thyroid ultrasound allows to clarify if the nodules are solid, mixed or cystic, to know if there are other nodules that are not palpable and to determine the relationship with neighboring structures and the presence of nodes.
Most frequent indications of this test:
- Thyroid cancer.
- Thyroid nodule.
Do you have any of these diseases?
You may need to have a thyroid ultrasound
How is thyroid ultrasound performed?
The sonographer will spread a gel (ultrasound transmitter medium) on your skin and slide an instrument, similar to a microphone, across your abdomen, called a transducer, asking you to assist with breathing when instructed.
The doctor follows the scan on a television monitor that has the ultrasound machine and obtains photographs of the areas of interest.
No previous preparation is necessary.
You will be able to have a normal breakfast. If you take medication on a regular basis, you can also take it.
