The difficulty of treating biofilm-associated infections has inspired the study of new treatment targets as well as combinations of new substances and antimicrobials with different mechanisms of action.

Lysostaphin is an endopeptidase extracted from Staphylococcus simulans biovar staphylolyticus that cleaves the pentaglycine cross-links in the cell walls of Staphylococcus spp., lysing bacteria.
