From the patient's first visit, we create the best diagnostic and therapeutic strategy for them. Their overall patient care plan is also planned out and organised, taking into account their family ́s needs as well. This allows for an efficient, guaranteed service for optimising patient care.

We are pioneering in Spain in administering vaccines to treat glioblastomas. Our results are very encouraging and will greatly increase the patient's life expectancy.

Some of the technology that we have improved in the last few years for increased efficiency and safety include:

  • Surgical Microscope: including a fluorescence system that dyes some tumorous tissue to assist in completely removing it.
  • Neurophysiological monitoring in the operating theatre: neurophysiological and anaesthesiologist specialists have worked together to monitor the patient, and now we are sometimes able to do the operation whilst the patient is awake. This helps the specialists to determine whether the surgery can continue in a certain area without causing the patient any harm or not. This increases the amount of tumorous tissue removed and decreases complications.
  • Surgery guided by intraoperative imaging: preliminary MRI scans are used to map out navigation through the brain during surgery. In the Clínica, high quality MRI scans can be done preoperatively before transferring the anaesthetised patient to the radiology department.

Chemotherapy aims to destroy the tumorous cells

There are two cases in which it becomes more difficult to administer chemotherapy to brain tumours:

  • When there is a blood-brain barrier that protects the central nervous system from toxic substances in the blood.
  • The tumour ́s resistance to current chemotherapeutic

Choosing one type of chemotherapeutic treatment over another depends on the tumour's histological type.

Despite the wide variety of treatments available, chemotherapy often doesn't stop the disease's development, therefore it is important to continue researching and running clinical trials in this field.

A combination of surgery (whenever possible), high dosage radiotherapy and chemotherapy has been proven to be the best treatment for high-grade gliomas for improving the patients' life expectancy.

Radiotherapy is very beneficial as a postoperative treatment and is administered with an appropriate dose (60 Gy) and sophisticated techniques that exclude healthy areas surrounding the tumorous tissue to avoid unnecessary toxicity.

New, specific techniques are now used such as 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, radiotherapy whilst changing the intensity of the beam and stereotactic techniques that requires the latest linear accelerators and the use of computers.

The simultaneous combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy has been proven when used on other types of tumours to benefit the patients' survival rate in comparison with only using radiotherapy. Further studies into brain tumours are being carried out in order to research deeper into this field and we are awaiting the results.

Immunotherapy repairs and increases the response of the patient 's immune system.

Vaccines are a type of active immunotherapy which create a response to tumorous antigens. The disease 's development is limited and the combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy is considered to be a good treatment option for patients with a certain type of brain tumour, such as glioblastomas.

The Clínica has put some pioneering clinical trials in place, administering the new therapy to participants combined with the standard treatment which is followed by the surgical removal of the tumour, and following the administration radiotherapy and chemotherapy with temozolomide. The vaccines are being developed in the GMP laboratory of Cellular Therapy at the Clínica with cells extracted from the patients themselves. Once processed, samples of the antigens from the patient's tumours are extracted and the vaccines are administered.
