AUTOTRANSPLANTATION (AUTOLOGOUS):

The patient's own progenitor cells are extracted and stored in order for them to subsequently be re-infused into the patient.

WITH A DONOR (ALLOGENEIC):

Syngeneic transplantation: this type of transplantation is performed between identical twins and is not associated with immunological events.

Allogeneic transplantation: this type of transplantation is performed between two individuals with genetic differences, but with the greatest possible similarities in their leukocyte antigens.

A bone marrow transplantation is a procedure in which a normal bone marrow function is restored and defective stem cells are replaced. When transplanted, these cells repopulate the bone marrow and resume the normal production of healthy blood cells and platelets.

Before undergoing a transplantation, patients receive a "conditioning" treatment consisting of high doses of chemotherapy and, occasionally, radiotherapy, in order to eliminate damaged stem cells present in the bone marrow.

This depresses the patient's immune system so that it does not attack the new stem cells that the patient will receive by means of the transplantation.
