Professional career

Preferred focus on chronic kidney disease in patients with diabetes, from early stages to hemodialysis, with a cardiorenal approach and multidisciplinary team-based care.

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Early diagnosis and renal and cardiovascular prognosis in patients with chronic kidney disease and diabetes
    • Identify serum and urinary biomarkers in collaboration with CIMA
    • Advance validation of clinical-use protocols for new multiparametric MRI sequences in patients with chronic kidney disease, in collaboration with the CUN Imaging Laboratory.
  • Since 2020, member of RENALMRI.org: an international multidisciplinary research network that promotes and coordinates research on innovative renal MRI biomarkers to accelerate clinical implementation.
  • Participation in established cooperative research networks (national and European) with secured funding for projects:
    • Member of the clinical research group in COST European Cooperation in Science & Technology: “Magnetic Resonance Imaging Biomarkers for Chronic Kidney Disease” CA COST Action CA16103 (July 2017–2020). 
    • Renal Research Network (REDINREN) (RD16/0009/0022) within the Instituto de Salud Carlos III Cooperative Thematic Research Network in Health (RETIC) (2016–2022). 
    • Cooperative Research Networks Oriented to Results (RICORS). RICORS2040 (RD21/0005/0024), since 01/2022.
  • Principal Investigator on 8 R&D projects and participating as a collaborating investigator on another 15.
  • Collaborating investigator with national groups: Spanish Society of Nephrology COVID Group (until 2023) and the Spanish Group on Renal Dysfunction after Cardiac Surgery (GEDRCC).

AREAS OF INTEREST

Her main clinical areas of interest and practice are:

  • Chronic kidney disease, in general, and especially in patients with diabetes, with a particular focus on cardiorenal care at all stages, and symptom control, especially in advanced kidney disease,
  • In-center hemodialysis.
  • Extracorporeal blood purification in chronic patients (hemodialysis and online hemodiafiltration) and in acute patients of different causes.

Activity

In teaching

  • Accredited Associate Professor by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) in 2023, and faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Navarra.
  • Awarded two six-year research periods (“sexenios”) by the National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity.
  • Master’s in Medical Education, Universidad de Navarra, 2012.
  • She has supervised 5 doctoral theses, all awarded the highest grade, and one with an Extraordinary Award and International Mention.
  • Undergraduate teaching: Course Director for Nephrology (5th year) in the MD program, clinical tutor, and supervisor of 8 undergraduate final projects and 1 master’s thesis.
  • Specialist teaching: organizer and instructor in continuing education courses in Nephrology for nursing (since 2010), accredited by the Navarra Continuing Education Commission, and in scientific update meetings in Navarra.

In research

  • First author of more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
  • More than 150 conference presentations.
  • 15 invited lectures at congresses and scientific meetings.
  • Principal Investigator on 8 R&D projects and collaborating investigator on another 15, one of them European: Renal MRI standardization to improve personalised management of CKD patients (RESPECT), ERA PerMed JTC2020 call.
  • Principal Investigator of the Associated Clinical Group in the Cardiovascular and Renal Area of the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Navarra (R&D Center) since January 2015.
  • Organizer or member of the organizing committee for at least 23 scientific activities (1 national congress in 2009, 3 editions of the Pamplona Nephrology Update, and accredited training days and continuing education courses on kidney disease and dialysis).
  • Reviewer of scientific articles for indexed journals: BMC Nephrology (United States of America), Diabetology International (United States of America), and Nefrología (Spain).
