Professional career
Degree in Biological Sciences, Universidad de Navarra, 1994.
PhD in Sciences, Universidad de Navarra, 2000, with research on the thermogenic effect of the adipokine leptin in rodents.
Since 2000, he has worked in the Metabolic Research Laboratory at Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
Research Fellow in the Diabetes and Endocrinology Research Unit, Department of Medicine, University of Liverpool (UK), 2001, studying the pathophysiology of the adipokine resistin.
RESEARCH AREAS
- Reviewer for more than 25 international journals, including Am J Physiol, ATVB, Diabetes Care, Endocrinology, and Int J Obes.
- He has participated in 20 national and regional projects, serving as Principal Investigator in 13 of them.
- Project evaluator for the National Agency for Evaluation and Foresight (ANEP) since January 2007.
AREAS OF INTEREST
- He combines basic studies in experimental animals with clinical studies on obesity and its comorbidities.
Activity
In teaching
- In July 2011, he was accredited as a tenured university professor.
- He is currently a tenured professor of Nutrition and Food Science (Bromatology) in the Endocrinology Teaching Unit, teaching at the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad de Navarra.
- He has supervised 4 doctoral theses and is currently supervising 3 more.
In research
- He has published more than 200 papers in indexed international journals related to obesity and energy metabolism, receiving more than 11,000 citations.
- He has presented more than 200 conference communications at national and international meetings, including 26 oral presentations and 28 invited lectures.
- He has contributed to 8 book chapters and is a co-author of a chapter in the prestigious Encyclopedia of Human Nutrition in the 2005, 2013, and 2023 editions.
- He has published 2 books related to obesity and adipose tissue.
- Since 2007, he has been an affiliated researcher at the Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Fisiopatología de la Obesidad y Nutrición (CIBERobn) of ISCIII in the group led by Dr. Gema Frühbeck.
