Professional career

Medical degree from the University of Navarra; she received the Extraordinary Doctoral Award from the School of Medicine of that same university in 1995.

Subsequently, she completed a postdoctoral stay in the United Kingdom, specifically at the Medical Research Council – Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre, University of Cambridge, in the Obesity and Energy Balance group led by Prof. Dr. Andrew Prentice, and was distinguished as a Research Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society.

During this time in the United Kingdom, she also worked as an Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge. Since 1998, she has held the title of Registered Nutritionist from the Nutrition Society (United Kingdom).

Since December 1998, she has been part of the Multidisciplinary Team for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Obesity at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and has  introduced body composition and indirect calorimetry tests into daily clinical practice.

Since 2015, Co-Director of the Obesity Area at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra.

  • Her main area of interest is the study of the pathophysiology and mechanisms of obesity.

In teaching

  • Full Professor of Nutrition and Food Science at the School of Medicine of the University of Navarra.

She has received various national and international distinctions for her work in the field of obesity and nutrition, including:

  • “López Sánchez” Foundation Award of the Royal National Academy of Medicine (2001)
  • “Clínica Abril” Research Award of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the District of Granada (Eastern Andalusia) and Corresponding Member of that same Royal Academy (2002)
  • Best Paper Award from “Obesity Surgery” (2004)
  • “Doctor Laguna Serrano” Award of the Royal National Academy of Medicine (2005) “Sir David Cuthbertson Medal” of the Nutrition Society (2005)
  • A.M.A. Award for Food and Health (2007)
  • Pfizer Award for Career Achievement in Neuroendocrinology from the Spanish Society of Endocrinology and Nutrition (2009)
  • GSK Award for Best Original Article from the Spanish Society for the Study of Obesity (2009)
