Dr. Alfredo García Layana
Director of the Department of Ophthalmology
Preferential dedication to the study and treatment of vitreoretinal diseases, macular pathology such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and great myopia as well as cataract surgery.
Professional career
Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra (1987). Doctor of Medicine from the University of Valladolid (1993). Degree in Family Medicine from the Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs (1994) and in Ophthalmology from the University of Valladolid (1993).
He has carried out specialization and improvement stays in diseases of the macula, vitreous and retina in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Boston (traumatisms and tumours), in the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston (macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy), in the New York Presbyterian Hospital of the University of Columbia (vitreoretinal surgery), in the Mount Sinai Hospital (posterior uveitis), and in the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital of New York (intraocular tumours).
RESEARCH AREAS
Participation in more than 35 Research Projects and Clinical Trials as principal investigator. It is worth mentioning his participation as principal investigator in the European Multinational project TARGET-AMD, a world pioneer in gene therapy in age-related macular degeneration with transposons.
Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Ophthalmology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Navarra. Member of the Board of Directors of the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous and the Retina Plus Foundation. National coordinator of the Research Program on Retinal Diseases of the "RETICS Oftared" of the Carlos III Health Institute of Madrid.
AREAS OF INTEREST
Vitreoretinal diseases, pathology of the macula such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and myopia magna. He has been performing vitreoretinal surgeries such as retinal detachments, epiretinal membranes and macular holes for over 20 years. He is also in charge of the treatment of eyeball tumors such as melanomas and posterior uveitis.
Activity
As an educator
Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarra (through a competition for the National Habilitation system) since 2007.
Three six-year periods of research recognized by the CNEAI (National Commission for the Evaluation of Research Activity). July 2nd, 2012.
Director of 9 doctoral theses, five of which have received national awards for the best doctoral thesis.
As a researcher
Author of more than 110 scientific publications. Author of 8 books and 19 book chapters. He has given more than 250 communications to congresses, national and international invited talks, presentations in courses and seminars.
Coordinator of the DMAE project of the RETICS research network of the Carlos III Health Institute called Ocular Pathology of Aging, Visual Quality and Quality of Life, as well as coordinator of the project of retinal diseases in the new RETICS in Prevalent and Chronic Ocular Pathology OFTARED.
