Dr. Miguel Naveiras
Ophthalmology Specialist.
Primary focus on the study and treatment of corneal disease, ocular surface disorders, cataracts, and glaucoma.
Professional career
He earned his Medical Degree (MD) in 2006 from the Autonomous University of Madrid and completed his residency (MIR) at Hospital Central de Asturias, with multiple clinical observerships at Harvard Medical School, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (USA), Moorfields Eye Hospital (UK), Clinique Montchoisi (Switzerland), and Carl Carus Medical School (Germany).
In 2010, he specialized in lamellar corneal transplantation with Dr. Melles (Clinical Fellow, Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery), contributing to the development of the innovative DMEK technique.
He completed a Master’s program in ocular surface, cornea, and refractive surgery in 2011 and worked at the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute until 2020, serving as transplant coordinator in collaboration with the Community Blood and Tissue Center of Oviedo.
He has held a PhD from the University of Oviedo since 2017, under the supervision of Drs. J.F. Alfonso and A. Meana.
RESEARCH AREAS
- Peer reviewer for several scientific journals; has participated as a sub-investigator in 8 clinical trials on corneal transplantation, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.
- Participates in multiple interdepartmental clinical trials with Oncology at Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
Activity
In teaching
- Teaching collaborator in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the University of Oviedo (2011–2020).
- Associate Professor at the University of Navarra since 2022.
In research
- Author and contributor to ten high-impact scientific articles and contributor to five book chapters.
- Has participated in more than fifty presentations at national and international conferences.
- Keynote speaker for the lecture “Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty” at the SECSA Pan-American International Course, Ecuador, 2023.
