Professional career
Medical degree from the University of the Republic (Montevideo, Uruguay).
PhD in Medicine from the University of Navarra, Pamplona.
Internal Medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, Miami, FL, USA.
Fellowship in Pulmonology and Critical Care at Tufts University, Boston, MA, USA.
Board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine by the ABIM (USA).
He has worked since 2006 as a Pulmonology Consultant at Clínica Universidad de Navarra.
From 2019 to 2022, he worked as a pulmonologist at Kingston General Hospital (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) and during that period was also a Professor of Medicine at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada).
RESEARCH AREAS
- He is a member of the scientific committee and principal investigator of the international BODE research group, internationally recognized for more than 100 publications in COPD research.
- He is a member of the scientific committee and principal investigator of the CHAIN study for longitudinal follow-up of patients with COPD.
- He has participated as principal investigator in the recent EPISCAN II study on the prevalence of COPD in Spain.
- He is or has been a member of the editorial board of the journals PLOS ONE and Archivos de Bronconeumología.
- He has received funding for more than 15 research studies on COPD, emphysema, and their association with lung cancer from public and private entities.
- He has recently received funding (€600,000) from ISCIII and SEPAR to explore anti-aging effects in patients with COPD/emphysema.

- Determination of the prevalence and impact of comorbidities associated with COPD using chest CT.
- Determination of body composition using low-dose CT in patients with COPD and its relationship with the natural history of the disease.

- He has been a Professor of Medicine at the University of Navarra and accredited by ANECA since 2009.
- He was a Professor of Medicine at Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario, Canada).
