Dr. Gabriel Reina
Specialist in Microbiology and Parasitology.
Primary clinical focus on applications of molecular microbiology and research in the diagnosis and characterization of infectious diseases.
Professional career
Degree in Pharmacy from the Universidad de Navarra (2001), after completing the third year at Cardiff University (United Kingdom) with an Erasmus scholarship, and PhD in Pharmacy from the Universidad de Granada (2007).
Specialist in Microbiology and Parasitology after completing residency training at Hospital Universitario Virgen de las Nieves in Granada (2002-2006). He completed training stays at the Centro Nacional de Microbiología (Majadahonda, Madrid) and at Hospital Universitario San Cecilio (Granada).
From December 2014 to September 2015, postdoctoral researcher in the HIV Laboratory of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School (Boston, USA).
RESEARCH AREAS
His priority research lines are:
- Epidemiology and characterization of viral infections in developing countries.
- Diagnosis of viral and bacterial infections through serologic and molecular analysis in dried blood spots (DBS).
- Humoral and cellular response after vaccination against SARS-CoV-2.
He has participated in 19 research projects.

- Genotypic resistance studies of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, CMV, and influenza.
- Serologic and molecular diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
- Diagnosis of congenital cytomegalovirus infection.
Activity
In teaching
- Accredited by ANECA as a Tenured Professor, he has taught various Microbiology courses in the Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Nursing undergraduate programs at the Universidad de Navarra since 2007.
- Faculty member in the Universidad de Navarra Master’s in Biomedical Research and the Master’s in Biomedical Engineering.
- Academic advisor for the School of Pharmacy.
- He has two recognized six-year research periods (2009-2014 and 2015-2020) awarded by the Comisión Nacional Evaluadora de la Actividad Investigadora (CNEAI).
In research
- He has participated in 19 research projects, published more than 75 articles in national and international scientific journals, and presented more than 200 papers at conferences in his specialty.
- He is the author of more than 31 book chapters and has supervised 2 doctoral theses, 7 master’s theses/research proficiency projects, and more than 26 bachelor’s final projects.
- Principal Investigator at ISTUN (Instituto de Salud Tropical Universidad de Navarra) of the HIV/AIDS research group since 2016. Member of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Group (Code 506) within the Inflammatory, Immune, and Infectious Diseases Area of IdiSNA (Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Navarra) since 2016.
