Dr. Carmen Herrero
Specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy.
Primary dedication to the study and treatment of benign and malignant hematologic diseases, as well as the management of thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications.
Professional career
Medical degree from the University of Salamanca (2013–2019).
Specialist in Hematology and Hemotherapy (2020–2024) at Severo Ochoa University Hospital, Madrid.
External rotations at national and international reference centers: flow cytometry (Salamanca University Hospital), hemophilia (La Paz University Hospital), molecular biology and cytogenetics (Gregorio Marañón Hospital), cell therapy (King’s College Hospital, London).
Between November 2024 and May 2025, she carried out clinical activity at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (Madrid campus), working in areas of diagnostic cytology, inpatient ward care, and specialized clinics in monoclonal gammopathies (multiple myeloma, MGUS, Waldenström macroglobulinemia), as well as in the clinical management of lymphoproliferative syndromes, anemias, and coagulation disorders.
I have experience in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of hematology patients, conventional and advanced therapies (HSCT, CAR-T), as well as in the management of thrombotic and hemorrhagic disorders.
RESEARCH AREAS
Collaborator in the project funded by ISCIII: Clinical phenotype and response to thrombopoietin receptor agonists in elderly patients with immune thrombocytopenia (PI22/01489).
Participation in protocols for diagnosis and management of hematologic diseases (CLL, TTP, Waldenström disease) at Severo Ochoa University Hospital.
Active doctoral research line on platelet function and immunologic aging in immune thrombocytopenia.
AREAS OF INTEREST
- Integrated diagnosis in hematology, thrombosis and hemostasis, flow cytometry, myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms, autoimmune platelet disorders, advanced therapies (CAR-T, HSCT).

- Teaching collaborator for medical students at Alfonso X University.
- Speaker in multiple clinical sessions and internal courses.
- Instructor of the “1st basic course for laboratory technicians” at Severo Ochoa Hospital (November 2022).

More than 17 presentations at national and international congresses (SEHH, SETH, ISTH, EHA, AMHH), including:- Oral presentation: The interplay of ageing and immune thrombocytopenia. Presentation at the ISTH 2025 Congress held in Washington, June 2025.
- Oral presentation: Primary immune thrombocytopenia in elderly patients. Speaker at the 19th Annual AMHH Congress, held at the Mutua Madrileña Building, April 22–24, 2025.
- Participation in multiple poster presentations at SEHH-SETH, ISTH, and other national and international congresses.
