Professional career

Graduated in Medicine and Surgery (1986, with Honors) and PhD in Medicine (2000) from the Autonomous University of Madrid. He ranked 70th in the Spanish MIR national medical residency examination. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hospital Universitario La Paz in Madrid.

In 1994-1995, he completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Rush-Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago, under the direction of Dr. Edgardo Yordan. After returning to Spain, he served as Secretary of the Gynecologic Oncology Section of the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SEGO) for five years and worked at the Gynecologic Oncology Service of Hospital Gregorio Marañón from 1995 to 2002.

In 2002, he was appointed Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid, a program he developed in close collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston. Since 2016, he has been Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Clínica Universidad de Navarra at its Madrid and Pamplona campuses. He is a Tenured Professor accredited by ANECA and Collaborating Professor at the University of Navarra.

With more than thirty years of experience, he has earned national and international recognition in gynecologic oncology, particularly as a surgeon specialized in complex pelvic pathology and advanced ovarian cancer. In 2021, the American College of Surgeons recognized him as one of the ten most distinguished surgeons in the world that year, and in 2025, the newspaper ABC named him one of the five best gynecologists in Spain.

  • Has organized more than 40 national and international conferences and trained specialists from over 40 countries through his surgical training programs.

In research

He holds 3 research six-year terms recognized by CNEAI, 260 publications indexed in Web of Science, more than 4,600 citations, and an h-index of 34, as well as 13 chapters in leading national and international books on gynecologic oncology.

He has participated in international multicenter studies such as SUROVA, SUCCOR, DAYDREAM, and SENECA, which have directly influenced clinical practice and international guidelines. Among his contributions is the SUROVA calculator, a predictive model for personalized treatment of advanced ovarian cancer.

He has served as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Gynecologic Cancer and is a regular reviewer for high-impact international journals in gynecologic oncology and surgery. He has delivered more than 300 national and international lectures.

  • Scientific Chair of the ESGO 2023 (Istanbul) and ESGO 2024 (Barcelona) congresses.

  • Director of the cooperation projects ELIKIA ("Hope in Lingala", Democratic Republic of the Congo, since 2017) and ALMA ("Local Care and Support Medicine", Santa Elena, Ecuador, since 2025), focused on cervical cancer prevention.
  • Founder of the "CUN te acompaña" program (2018), a pioneering initiative providing comprehensive support to families in perinatal palliative care.
