Professional career
Medical degree (1986) and PhD in Medicine and Surgery (2000) from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hospital La Paz (Madrid) (1988–1991).
In 1994, he completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center (Chicago) and subsequently worked in the Gynecologic Oncology Service at Hospital Gregorio Marañón from 1995 to 2002.
For the past 14 years, he has been the founding Director of the Department of Gynecologic Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center Madrid, where he was head of the Surgical Oncology area from 2008 to 2010.

- Faculty member, Department of Gynecology, The University of Texas, since 2005.
- Professor of Surgical Oncology at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria since 2014.
- In recent years, he has served as Director of the Teaching Committee and as a member of MD Anderson’s Research Committee.
- Distinguished Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Navarra, since December 2016.
- Editor-in-Chief of ESGO eAcademy since May 2020.
In research
Member of the Scientific Committee of the American Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) and the only Spanish member of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) Quality Assessment Committee in Ovarian Cancer Surgery.
Member of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (SEGO).
Research activity:
• Founder and Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Gynecologic oncology: a multidisciplinary approach”.
• He has published more than 100 papers in national and international journals and has been invited as a speaker on more than 200 occasions.
• He has written 21 book chapters and has organized 39 conferences.
