Dr. Julio Duart Clemente
Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology.
Primary focus on pediatric orthopedics and sports-related knee injuries.
Professional career
Graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad de Navarra (2001) and earned a doctorate in Medicine from the same university (2005), with the distinction of outstanding cum laude.
Specialist in Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, trained at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (2003-2008). Master's degree in Healthcare Center and Service Management from the Universidad de Barcelona (2010-2012). Expert qualification in Medical Ethics from the Fundación Formación OMC - Ortega Marañón (2019-2021).
Expert qualification in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound from the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (2021-2022) and a continuing education master's degree in Pediatric Orthopedics from TECH Universidad (2024-2025).
Clinical collaborator in the Pediatric Orthopedics Unit at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (2008-2010). From 2010 to 2026, he practiced in the Servicio Navarro de Salud–Osasunbidea, including at the Hospital Universitario de Navarra. He joins the Clínica Universidad de Navarra in October 2026.
He completed training placements at Cleveland Clinic (2007), Hospital Sant Joan de Déu in Barcelona (2008), Kinderspital in Basel (2009), and Mayo Clinic in Rochester (2012). During the EPOS–POSNA Travelling Fellowship (2013), he visited the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Delaware, Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, Campbell Clinic in Memphis, and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto.
RESEARCH AREAS
- His research interests include meniscal repair and preservation, articular cartilage regeneration, and pediatric musculoskeletal conditions. He has participated as a principal investigator and collaborating investigator in experimental and clinical research projects, including the European multicenter EPOS Discoid Meniscus (DiMe) study.
- He serves as a reviewer for scientific journals, including the Journal of Children's Orthopaedics, EFORT Open Reviews, Revista Española de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, and Revista Española de Artroscopia y Cirugía Articular.

- Pediatric orthopedics and traumatology, growth disorders, and deformities of the lower limbs and spine.
- Sports-related knee injuries in children and adolescents: anterior cruciate ligament injuries, meniscal injuries, and discoid meniscus.
- Patellar instability, osteochondritis dissecans, and osteochondral lesions.
Activity
In teaching
- Visiting professor at the School of Medicine of the Universidad de Navarra since 2018, with university teaching experience since 2004.
- Experience supervising Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology residents at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra and the Complejo Hospitalario de Navarra, as well as serving on medical education committees.
- Instructor and director of training activities in pediatric orthopedics and traumatology. Coeditor of the SEOP monograph Ortopedia Infantil para Residentes (2019).
In research
- Author or coauthor of more than 50 scientific articles and numerous chapters in national and international books. His publications include notable work on meniscal repair, anterior cruciate ligament injuries in skeletally immature patients, osteochondritis dissecans, and pediatric arthroscopy.
- He has delivered more than 100 oral presentations and presented numerous posters at national and international conferences. He has participated as a speaker and moderator at meetings of SEOP, EPOS, SECOT, and the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Ortopedia y Traumatología, among other societies.

- Presidente de la Sociedad Española de Ortopedia Pediátrica (SEOP) desde junio de 2025. Anteriormente, secretario (2018-2021) y vicepresidente (2023-2025).
- Miembro del grupo de estudio de patología deportiva de la European Paediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS) y de su Reading Committee.
- Vocal de la Comisión Nacional de la Especialidad de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología del Ministerio de Sanidad desde 2023.
- Miembro de SECOT, la Sociedad Vasco-Navarra de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología, la Asociación Española de Artroscopia, GEER, AO Spine, EORS e INVESCOT.
Premios
- Premio Fundación SECOT de Investigación Básica en Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología (2005), por un estudio experimental sobre reparación meniscal.
- Premio Miguel Cabanela de la Fundación SECOT (2011).
- Accésit al Premio Fundación SECOT–MAPFRE al mejor trabajo publicado en revista indexada en 2007.
- Premios a comunicaciones científicas en congresos de SECOT, SEOP y la Sociedad Vasco-Navarra de Cirugía Ortopédica y Traumatología.
- Accésit al Premio Fundación SECOT a las mejores videotécnicas del 57 Congreso Nacional SECOT (2020), por una técnica de reconstrucción del ligamento cruzado anterior en pacientes con fisis abiertas.
