Professional career

Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Córdoba (1995) and a doctorate in Medicine, with distinction cum laude, from the University of Navarra (2011). He completed his specialty training in Cardiology at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (1999-2004) and a master's degree in Pulmonary Hypertension (2012).

He is a clinical consultant in the Department of Cardiology at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, where he is responsible for the cardiology inpatient area —including the Coronary Care Unit— and directs the Heart Failure Unit. He is a board member and secretary of the Department of Cardiology.

RESEARCH AREAS

  • Myocardial regeneration therapy with stem cells.
  • Tissue engineering and the development of cardiac disease models, particularly cardiac amyloidosis.
  • Heart failure and the detection of cardiotoxicity associated with cancer treatments.

AREAS OF INTEREST

  • Heart failure and its comprehensive management.
  • Cardiomyopathies, with a special focus on cardiac amyloidosis.
  • Valvular diseases and pulmonary hypertension.

Activity

In teaching

  • Professor of Cardiology in the Medicine Degree at the University of Navarra and professor in the Master's in Biomedical Research.
  • He has supervised 6 doctoral theses, as well as numerous final degree projects.
  • Tutor of residents in the Department of Cardiology.

In research

  • Author of 67 publications in national and international scientific journals, with an h-index of 27.
  • He has been awarded three officially recognized six-year research productivity periods (sexenios).
  • Principal investigator of 2 research projects and inventor of one patent.
  • Principal investigator and sub-investigator in several clinical trials in the field of heart failure and amyloidosis.
