Professional career

Medical degree (1986) and PhD in Medicine and Surgery (1992) from the University of Valladolid.

University Specialist in Bioethics (1995) and Master’s in Palliative Medicine (2000).

He specialized in Radiation Oncology (1997) at Valladolid University Hospital, where he participated in the establishment of the first palliative care team in Castile and León.

He was a Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Alberta in Canada (1998) and subsequently collaborated in the establishment of the Regional Center for Palliative Medicine at Los Montalvos Hospital in Salamanca.

For the past twenty years, he has been Director of Palliative Medicine at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra, and since 2012 he has combined his clinical activity with his work as Principal Investigator of the ATLANTES Program of the Institute for Culture and Society of the University of Navarra (ICS)

Activity

In teaching

  • Full Professor of Palliative Medicine at the School of Medicine of the University of Navarra. He teaches the Palliative Medicine course in the MD program and palliative medicine topics in Psychology, Nursing, Theology, and the Core Curriculum Institute of the University of Navarra.

In research

He is Director of the ATLANTES Global Observatory of Palliative Care, a Research Group of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS) of the University of Navarra that has been designated a WHO Collaborating Centre and is one of the research groups of the Navarra Health Research Institute (IdiSNA)

He has published the books:

In addition, he is the author of more than 155 research papers, published in national and international journals, on communication at the end of life, neurotoxicity, delirium, methadone, subcutaneous administration of medications, service development, etc.
