Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma: Impact and implications

Since their first documented use in 1962, it is estimated that up to 10 million breast implants have been implanted globally with increasing use for both de novo cosmetic augmentation, replacement of cosmetic implants from previous decades and, increasingly, use in the reconstruction of women following mastectomy for breast cancer.

Twenty years ago, Keech and colleagues described the first case of an unusual lymphoma linked to a breast implant. This was followed by a trickle of case reports, none having particular impact, such that by 2010 there were 34 documented cases and the USA Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) started to take notice.
