Specialty clinic for kidney diseases in onco-hematologic patients

Onconephrology is the subspecialty focused on protecting kidney health in people with cancer. The kidneys can be affected both by the cancer itself and by treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy. Our goal is to prevent, detect, and treat these complications so the cancer plan remains effective and safe.

With advances in cancer therapies, patients are living longer and better; that’s why it is essential to protect kidney function throughout the entire process. In this clinic, our nephrologists have specific training in the renal effects of cancer treatments and how to manage them without disrupting the overall cancer strategy.

We work in close coordination with Oncology, Hematology, and Radiation Oncology to tailor treatments to each person’s kidney function and minimize adverse effects. We frequently manage issues such as drug-induced kidney toxicity, acute kidney injury related to tumors or metastases, and fluid and electrolyte disturbances (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, among others).

We also take a preventive approach in higher-risk patients: we recommend proper hydration, review and adjust doses of potentially nephrotoxic drugs, and provide close monitoring with labs and kidney function biomarkers. Our aim is to preserve kidney function as much as possible, reduce hospital admissions, and avoid interruptions in cancer treatment.

The nephrologists in this clinic are active members of the ONCO-NEFRO Group of the Spanish Society of Nephrology, ensuring continuous updates and the application of evidence-based best practices.
