Laser Eye Surgery

"At the Clinic we have one of the most advanced Excimer laser systems on the market and a 24-hour ophthalmic emergency service".

DR. LUIS MANUEL SÁDABA ECHARRI
SPECIALIST. OPHTHALMOLOGY DEPARTMENT

Excimer laser treatment is used to modify the curvature of the cornea to correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, presbyopia and/or astigmatism in certain patients.

It makes the patient stop depending on glasses and contact lenses in his daily life.

An exhaustive preoperative evaluation is essential to assess possible candidates for this type of surgery and to obtain the best results.

The Excimer Laser is very precise and safe and the characteristics of this intervention are the following:

  • This technique is performed on an outpatient basis, that is, it does not require admission.
  • It is performed under topical anesthesia (by means of drops).
  • It lasts about five minutes, of which the application of the laser is reduced to a few seconds, and the rest corresponds to the preparation of the patient.
  • Both eyes are operated on the same day.

How is the eye laser performed?

Eye surgery consists of the application of the laser on the cornea in order to remove microscopic amounts of tissue to modify its previous curvature.

Laser eye surgery is a very fast procedure and its recovery does not have major complications. The patient will feel some discomfort during the first week, which will be completely removed after 7 days. It is important to remember that although laser eye surgery is very simple and non-invasive, it is still an operation for which some post-operative care must be respected.

This technique of molding the cornea has been used for more than 20 years. At the Clinica Universidad de Navarra a series of technical innovations have been introduced which allow us to obtain excellent results with a total guarantee of safety.

The Excimer Laser is used, because its extraordinary precision makes it possible to adjust surgery to the order of microns, that is, one thousandth of a millimeter. Another advantage of the laser is its speed of action, which ensures its effectiveness in a few seconds of application.

Excimer Laser Correction improves vision to the extent that the patient can live a normal life without glasses or contact lenses.

In this way, the discomforts caused by glasses (chronic irritation in nose and ears, weight of glasses, reflexes, limited peripheral vision, etc.) or contact lenses (intolerance by conjunctivitis or repetitive corneal ulcers, continuous requirement of careful care, high accumulated expense over the years, etc.) are avoided.

It also improves the physical aspect and achieves a higher quality of life and comfort to perform any type of activities.
