This programme is recommended for some patients with a BMI over 40kg./m2. and patients with a BMI over 35kg./m2. with coexisting associated conditions (type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, arterial hypertension…).
Before having a surgical operation, the patient must be evaluated by Endocrinology and Nutrition specialists. Furthermore, a complete analysis, chest X-ray and Cardiological study must be carried out. If the patient has diabetes, specific tests are done.
Given the complexity of these patients, respiratory function and sleep testing will also be carried out, for which a 1 or 2 day hospital stay is required, as well as an abdominal ultrasound, bone densitometry and gastroscopy. To complete the process, an evaluation with an anaesthetist and tests for blood clotting are carried out prior to surgery.
Throughout the programme, they will be treated by a Psychiatry specialist in order to prevent any future problems, as ensuring a good psychological balance is important when faced with the changes brought about by bariatric surgery.
