Surgical aspects of renal transplantation

Expansion of donor criteria and more efficient use of the donor pool are needed to address the current organ shortage.

Results of renal transplantation in older patients support broader recipient selection. To improve intraoperative donor and recipient management, and decrease the rate of delayed graft function, and refine surgical techniques to address more complicated patients are also attempts to expand donor pool.

Use of hepatitis-C-positive donors is not safe in hepatitis-C-positive recipients for non-life-saving organs.
