Recently, a novel radiofrequency device has been introduced for nonablative facial skin tightening. This device delivers 6-MHz alternating current radiofrequency signal to the skin and cools the surface of the epidermis to avoid excessive heating and thermal injury. Multiple studies evaluating the face-lift effect have been published but few have analyzed histologically the skin of the patients treated.

This device was originally launched with a 1-cm2 software controlled tip that cooled the epidermal surface for about 2 seconds and delivered monopolar radiofrequency for about an additional 2 seconds. The only parameter that can be changed is the total amount of energy delivered. With these parameters, results were quite variable, being quite successful in some patients, whereas very poor in others.
